Benefits of Allergy Immunotherapy

Allergy Immunotherapy, as per medical terms, is defined as a process that includes stimulation of the immune system by gradually increasing doses of the substances to which a person is allergic. This form of treatment is very effective for allergies to pollen, mites, animal dander, and especially stinging insects.

Immunization shots against allergies work exactly like other vaccinations. The process includes - injection of a small amount of allergen in to your body. This injection would lead your body to produce a substance or ‘antibody’ that neutralizes the allergen’s effect.

In medical explanation – this injection of allergens actually ‘confuses’ the immune system and changes the way your body responds to allergies. Gradually your body will build immunity to the allergens that produce allergy symptoms. The whole process will take some time to show its results.

Allergy Immunization shots are given every week or every other week. The dose keeps increasing till a maintenance level is reached (which can be in 4 to 6 months). After this first stage the shots will be given every 3rd or 4th week. Depending on individual immunity, the treatment might take 3 years, 5 years or more.

Keep tab for reactions after the shots have been given to you. Get medical help for any kind of reaction.
