Basics of Allergy Test

Posted on August 4, 2007 in Latest News

An allergic reaction is a kind of ‘immune system response’ to certain substances in environment. As these substances instigate the reaction they are called triggers. An allergy test helps specify the triggers.

When health professionals suspect an allergic reaction they ask the patient to go for allergy test. Several methods are adopted by them to perform an allergy test. These include Skin Tests, Blood Tests and Proactive Tests. They will suggest a particular method of testing keeping in mind the symptoms of your allergy.

Skin Tests are not done on children below 3 years of age. Before every allergy test it is a must that the person should not take medicines, like antihistamines, that could block a skin reaction and lead to a false report.

You should be prompt to stay back in the medical lab, after the test, to ensure that there are no side effects of the allergy test conducted on you. Be prepared to face allergic reactions after the test if you have an allergy. Occasionally, a test might be inaccurate for several reasons like – “a person might react to a substance during testing yet never have a problem with it during daily life.”

However, all new or worsening symptoms should be reported to your doctor at every stage. This will get you medical assistance the moment of need.
