What Are Cat Allergies

Posted on August 9, 2007 in Latest News

Cat allergy is one of the most common pet allergies. And nearly 40% of asthmatics are sensitive to cats. A tiny protein particle, the “Fel d 1″, found in many cat skin flakes and saliva is the reason for this allergy.

Experts explain, “The protein “Fel d 1″ is produced in the cat salivary glands and sebaceous glands of the skin. Cats are fastidious groomers, so they deposit the Fel d 1 protein on their fur by licking themselves. Individual cats may produce more or less allergen; there is no relationship between the pet’s hair length and allergen production, and no such thing as a non-allergic breed. Male cats are more allergic than female cats, because testerone increases Fel d 1 production by the sebaceous glands.”

Symptoms of Cat Allergy include – red, itchy, watery eyes; nasal congestion; itchy nose; sneezing; difficulty breathing; chronic sore throat and/or scratchy throat; coughing, wheezing, or itchy skin and chest tightening.

Where can you find Cat Allergen?

It is impossible not to be exposed to cat allergens. This is because of the nature of the cat allergen – it is sticky and so is carried on clothing from one place to other. Therefore, homes with no cats may also have cat allergens. So, no office or house without cats is secure from cat allergens. However, it is obvious that homes with cats will have more number of cat allergens.

Cat allergy spreads rapidly as cat allergens are airborne. These allergens are also found on carpets, walls, sofa and mattresses. And, this means that it is practically tough to get rid of this allergen.
