If your eyes turn red, are itchy, tearing or burning, then you may have an eye allergy or allergic conjunctivitis. You become allergic when your body’s immune system overreacts or is sensitive to something that is ordinarily harmless. And this ‘something’ to which you are allergic is called an allergen.
Allergens attack particular eye cells called ‘Mast Cells’, releasing histamine and other chemicals. The substances when released cause blood vessels in the eyes to swell and the eyes become itchy, red and watery.
Apart from itchy, red and watery eyes you might also get nasal allergy symptoms like sneezing, sniffling, irritation and a stuffy nose. When eye allergy symptoms are accompanied by these nasal allergy symptoms, you might get yourself treated for nasal allergy and ignore eye allergy symptoms. In such cases the discomfort continues to remain. Therefore be careful not to ignore the allergy symptoms in your eyes.
Allergens that trigger Eye Allergy:
The most common airborne allergens are grass, tree and weed pollens. If you are sensitive to these allergens then you might suffer from season allergic conjunctivitis.
In case of indoor allergens, you might find yourself allergic to Pet hair or dander, dust mites and molds. Sensitivity to these indoor allergens may result into recurrent allergic conjunctivitis.
A few irritants like cigarette smoke, perfumes and diesel exhaust may worsen your allergy symptoms by inflaming your eyes.
Consult your allergist to know about the right treatment for your Eye Allergy’s nature.
