The best way to identify your allergies is by consulting your allergist and undergoing allergy tests. Identifying your allergies by mere observation can be difficult. This is because you have to pay close attention to where and when you are having the allergy symptoms.
Moreover, allergies can be caused by a variety of sources such as pollen, mold, animal dander, food etc. and it is difficult to identify the specific source of your allergies. Therefore, allergy testing is the first step you can take to be treated effectively for allergies.
Types of Allergy Tests:
Allergy tests can identify the source of your allergies. Here are some of the allergy tests which are trusted:
- Skin prick test: Skin prick test gives fast results and is also reasonably priced. In this test, several drops of solution, each containing suspected allergen, is placed on the skin (mostly on the forearm, upper arm or back). Now a series of needle pricks or scratches are done at those locations. The solution containing the allergen now enters the skin. If you are allergic to a certain allergen (in the solution), a raised, itchy area develops at the location. This would indicate that you are allergic to the particular allergen
- Intradermal test: In this test, a solution containing the suspected allergen is injected under the surface of the skin. The site is now observed for any reactions. This test is done if a suspected allergen is not identified by a skin prick test
- Patch test: Patch testing is done to identify the allergens causing allergic contact dermatitis. In this test, patches containing suspected allergens are placed on the upper back. These patches are removed after 46 hours. Redness, swelling, blisters at the location of the patches indicate that you are allergic to the particular allergen
- Blood test: In this test, the blood sample is taken and sent to lab to determine if any antibodies of allergens are present in your blood. If immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies for specific allergens are more than 4 times the normal level, then it would mean that you are allergic to the particular allergen
Allergy testing is convenient and easy. Allergy testing can help you to avoid the allergens and get treated effectively for allergies. Hence, consult your allergist or doctor who would determine the best test to identify your allergies.
