Chlorine allergy is the reaction to the chemical chlorine commonly used in swimming pools, drinking water, and bleaches etc. Chlorine allergy triggers physical allergy reactions such as rashes, itchiness etc. However, in many cases, other chemicals present in the water trigger the allergic reaction

The symptoms of chlorine allergy are hives, itchiness, and rashes on the skin. Chlorine allergy comes under physical allergy, where protein is not involved in the triggering  of allergy.

Some chemicals like ammonia can also result in skin reactions.  Improperly maintained swimming pools can trigger such reactions. High levels of chlorine can also result in respiratory problem. Hence, make sure your swimming pool minimizes chlorine content and has proper maintenance

Managing Severe Chlorine Allergies:
If your chlorine allergies are severe, it is recommended to completely avoid contact with chlorine. Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools; go for pools which use bromide for purification. You would also have to avoid chlorinated tap water. Contacting an allergist would be the best way to diagnose and manage chlorine allergies

To treat the skin reaction to chlorine, you can use antihistamines, epinephrine, and topical creams.
