Children and adolescents who are obese may have higher risk of allergies, according to a new study. This study was funded by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. In this study, researchers found out that obese kids had higher levels of IgE antibodies. High levels of IgE antibodies indicates greater risk of allergies.
The Study:
Researchers analyzed participants from 2 to 19 years of age. These participants were from 2005 to 2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The researchers found out that:
- Participants who were overweight were 26% likely to have high levels of IgE antibodies. (IgE antibodies, which are triggered by the white blood cells, play a major role in triggering allergic reaction)
- Participants who were overweight were 59% more likely to have high levels of IgE antibodies against specific foods
- Participants who were obese had increased C-reactive protein levels; increased C-reactive protein levels are responsible for enhancing allergic inflammation
Why are Obese Kids More Likely To Have Allergies?
The researchers opine that obese kids are more likely to eat large quantities and varities of foods. This may stimulate the immune system to trigger allergies. Another reason why obese kids are prone to allergies is that fat tissue produces leptin. Leptin plays a role in sensitization of the immune system towards proteins
In summary, obesity can result in high levels of IgE antibodies, C-reactive protein levels and leptin, all of which can make a person susceptible to allergies. Getting rid of obesity can be beneficial in preventing allergies, especially in kids and adolescents. Parents can help kids in overcoming obesity by encouraging them to exercise and eat healthy
