Lipstick Allergy Causes

Lipstick allergy, though rare, can cause extreme discomfort especially when the reaction shows up during important occasions. Lipstick allergy is caused when the immune system reacts against the ingredients present in the lipstick. Lipstick allergy can be managed by selecting those lipsticks which do not contain allergy-causing ingredients.

Lipstick Allergy Symptoms:

The symptoms of lipstick allergy are swelling, itching and redness of the lips. Sometimes, the lips can also turn black due to the allergic reaction.

What Causes Lipstick Allergies?

Lipstick contains various ingredients and each brand uses its unique formula. The common ingredients in lipstick which may cause allergies are:

  • Fish and shellfish derivatives
  • Seafood derivatives
  • Carmine
  • Lanolin
  • Beeswax
  • Vaseline

A few lipsticks are alleged to have high amounts of lead which causes the reactions. Most people are affected due to the fish and seafood derivatives. Also, carmine, the red coloring agent, is known to trigger allergies.

Preventing Lipstick Allergy:

Here are a few ways to manage lipstick allergy:

  • Read the labels to see if the lipstick has any ingredient which causes allergy and avoid them
  • Prefer hypo-allergenic lipsticks as they are less likely to trigger allergies
  • Shift to a different brand of lipstick
  • Prefer natural/organic lipsticks and avoid lipsticks made from animal by-products

You can also consult an allergist, who would be able to determine the ingredient you are allergic to, through a skin test or blood test.

Sometimes, a reaction to lipstick can be due to an expired or cheap brand of lipstick. Hence, make sure you avoid such reactions by choosing a good lipstick brand.
