What is a Hypoallergenic Watch?

A hypoallergenic watch does not contain nickel and other metals such as cobalt which can trigger allergies. Instead it contains hypoallergenic materials. Some of the materials used in the hypoallergenic watches are:

  • Stainless steel
  • Titanium
  • Silver
  • Gold

Nickel is used to give a shiny and smooth finish to the metals. However, it can cause metal allergy. If you suspect that you have nickel allergy, always use nickel-free watches. Make sure the watch strap does not contain powerful dies which can irritate the skin and cause allergies.

Allergy Testing:

If you are experiencing allergy to your watch, you can get yourself tested for allergies. Patch testing or blood testing (RAST) can be done to check if you have nickel allergy.

If you have watch allergy, you should also avoid nickel jewelry, bracelets, belts or other materials. If you experience watch allergy, you can minimize the rash, itchiness of skin by:

  • Applying cold compresses on the skin
  • Using hydrocortisone cream
  • Topical steroids
  • Oral antihistamine

To temporary keep your watch from triggering allergies, you can paint a coat of nail polish at the back of your watch. This works temporarily. However, for permanent safety from metal allergies, buy yourself a hypoallergenic watch.
