Shampoo Allergy: Prevention and Treatment

Shampoo allergy is caused due to the ingredients present in the shampoo. Fragrances, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl are the mainly responsible which trigger shampoo allergy. Allergy to shampoo can result in itching, rashes over the scalp, shoulders or the back.

Ingredients which cause Shampoo Allergy:

Here are a few ingredients which can result in shampoo allergy:

  • Sodium laureth sulfate
  • Sodium lauryl
  • Preservatives
  • Foaming agents
  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
  • Lavender oil
  • Rose oil
  • Chamomile

Symptoms of Shampoo Allergy:

Shampoo allergy can result in rashes, pimples, redness and itchiness of the skin. The skin of the scalp becomes itchy and scaly. The irritation can also be present at the back and the shoulders.

Preventing Shampoo Allergy:

If you are experiencing allergy to your shampoo, try switching to a different shampoo.You can choose hypoallergenic shampoos which have low fragrance levels. These shampoos also contain minimum additives, which can help you to overcome the allergy. Choosing a shamoo from an organic store may also be helpful.

Treating Shampoo Allergy:

Using hydrocortisone cream over the affected area can offer temporary relief. However, if the allergy is persistent, do consult an allergist. An allergist can conduct patch test to test for allergies. The tests would be helpful to determine the ingredient which is triggering the allergies. Your allergist would then be able to prescribe a milder shampoo or medications to treat the allergy.

Shampoo allergy can be prevented. Make sure you try out a milder or a natural shampoo. If this does not work, do consult your allergist.
