Peanut, soy, egg, milk are some of the common food allergies we come across. But, did you know that potato can cause an allergy? Potato has certain proteins which can cause an allergic reaction. If you are allergic to potato, try eating cooked potato. This is because many with allergy to raw potato can tolerate cooked potato.
If you child has potato allergy, the good news is that many kids overgrow potato by the time they are 6 years. Till that time, you can either feed your child cooked potato or completely eliminate potato from his/her diet.
Symptoms of Potato Allergy:
- Eczema
- Hives
- Runny nose
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
How to Know if you Have Potato Allergy?
If you experience the above symptoms after eating food, its time to check if you have potato allergy. Eliminate potato from your diet for a period of 1 week or more. After elimination, if your symptoms subside and you feel better, you might be allergic to potatoes. You can also confirm your allergy by taking up an allergy test.
Blood test (RAST) and skin prick tests can be conducted to test for potato allergy. You can consult your allergist for these tests.
Preventing Potato Allergy:

Eating cooked potato can help some people in overcoming the allergy
- Reading the labels and avoiding those products which contain potato can prevent the allergy
- Avoiding cross-contamination and being careful while eating out can help in preventing the allergy
If you suspect potato allergy, consult your allergist. He/she may conduct allergy tests and prescribe antihistamines or corticosteroids to treat potato allergy.
