What is Flour Allergy?
Flour allergy is caused due proteins present in the flour. The immune system mistakenly identifies these proteins as harmful and reacts against it. This results in allergic reaction, leading to hives, eczema, vomiting, diarrhea etc. People who are exposed to flour – bakers, chefs, cooks, are at high risk of being allergic to flour.
Symptoms of Flour Allergy:
Following are the symptoms of allergies to flour:
- Itchy skin
Anaphylaxis is a severe form of allergy which can result in symptoms such as dizziness, breathlessness, low blood pressure and can even be fatal. Anaphylaxis be avoided by immediately injecting an epinephrine.
About 90% of the flour comes from wheat. However, the following flours are also widely used:
- Oat flour
- Barley flour
- Rice flour
Flour is used to make cakes, bread, pasta, sauces, gravy and many other food products. Hence, people with flour allergy should be careful while eating the products which contain flour.
People with flour allergy can take up allergy tests such as blood test and skin prick test to know if they have allergy. Allergy testing can help you to determine the particular flour for which you are allergic to. This can help in avoidance and prevention of allergy.
Treatment of flour allergy includes taking antihistamines or corticosteroids. Prevention of flour should be followed. For this, you can read food labels and inquire about the ingredients while eating out.
