What is Apitherapy or Bee Venom Therapy ?

Apitherapy which is also called bee venom therapy or bee therapy is an age old therapeutic practice. It basically deals with the medicinal use of products formed by honey bees. The ancient rock art depictions of early hunters-gatherers vividly reveal the utility of honey bee as an effective medicine. Archaeological evidence suggests that bee venom therapy is as old as conventional medicine and was used in tandem with conventional treatment methods.

The products of honey bees that find wide usage in day to day life include the following:

  • Royal jelly
  • Propolis
  • Beeswax

Bee venom therapy was practised in great civilizations of India, Greece, Egypt and China. The Greek physician Hippocrates, who is widely regarded as the Father of Modern Medicine also recognized the wonder effects of Bee venom. He recognized the utility of bee venom in treating the diseases like arthritis and other joint problems.

Austrian physician Philip Terc is regarded as the pioneer of bee therapy. Way back in 1888 in his paper tiled Report about a Peculiar Connection between the Bee Stings and Rheumatism he revealed the therapeutic effects of bee venom. It was Bodog Beck who brought Apitherapy to the United States. Charles Mraz (1905 – 1999) is credited with most recent documentation of the effectiveness of bee venom therapy.
