The Season:

At the end of winter trees and plants are back to life. Dried up remnants from trees trigger miserable sneezing and sniffling resulting in sore throat. Other symptoms are runny nose, cough and congestion.

Allergies are immune system reactions to something that is touched, inhaled or eaten. The substance is called allergen and is treated as an enemy by the immune system. Dust pollen, animal dander and molds are the most common allergens found in environment. Scratchy throat is one of the symptoms of allergies.

What to do?

In allergy the first thing to do is avoid the contact of allergens. Take care that you are not exposed to allergens in any form. Use air conditioners to filter the pollens and dust. Sleep in dust-free area, away from animals. Use covers on mattress and pillows. Clean and change them often. These are precautionary measures. Next we give three effective home remedies to treat scratchy throat:

Saline water gargling:

Boil 3 to 4 cups of water and add 4 tablespoons of salt to it. Wait till it becomes warm enough to use as gargle water. Gulp this water in your throat and gargle by making air bubbles. Spit out the water and repeat this till you finish the solution. Do this 3 times a day. You can see that scratchy throat is relieved to a great extent.

Cough Syrups:

You can as well use over-the-counter cough syrups to treat uneasiness in the throat. Read the instructions on the syrup bottle before using it. Antibiotics for strep throat like strepsils are good medicines for this condition.

Tea made with ginger and honey:

Drinking warm tea helps to treat scratchy throat. This is also taken as home remedy for sore throat. Prepare decoction of tea and add freshly-cut ginger root. Boil and strain in a cup. Add honey and lemon juice to it. Take this 2 to 3 times a day.
