Fire Ant Allergy Symptoms

A fire ant bite can cause severe health problems in a few individuals as it can cause allergy. These are small insects which grasp the skin and cling on to it and stings in a circular manner. Fire ants are wingless insects and belongs to the class Hymenoptera. Allergy can be caused due to bite by fire ant’s sting. Its bite can lead to several reactions in the body.

Some common symptoms caused by fire ant bite are redness and local swelling on immediate sting. These swellings can turn into pus filled blisters. These blisters are caused by the venom of the ant. Some people can suffer large blisters due to stung by ants. Blisters healing is accompanied with pain and itching. Some other common symptoms of fire ant allergy are discussed in this article.

Fire Ant Allergy Symptoms

Fire ant allergy can cause the following symptoms:

  • Itching locally or on the whole body
  • Hives in skin
  • Initially local swelling and can spread later on
  • Wheezing
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal drip
  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Unconsciousness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Confusion
  • Swelling on lips, tongue and mouth

Treatment of Fire Ant Bite

The general treatments for minor reactions caused by fire ant bite are as follows:

  • Cold compress can be applied to the affected area to get relief from swelling and pain.
  • Limb should be elevated to limit swelling.
  • Stung area should be washed with water and soap or an antiseptic solution to stop infection. It should be done in such a manner so as to avoid breaking the blister.
  • Oral antihistamines should be taken to get relief from swelling and itching.
  • If the blisters break, keep the affected are clean to avoid infection.

A patient must seek medical attention in case of major allergic reactions caused by fire ant allergy. Desensitization treatment should be followed to protect allergic individuals from serious reactions due to fire ant stings. These treatments are performed under medical supervision.
