MSG Allergy Symptoms

MSG is scientifically called Mono Sodium Glutamate, which is commonly used to enhance Chinese food flavor, soups, tinned and boxed foods and also in processed foods. The trade name for MSG is Ajinomoto. MSG is a sodium salt of Glutamic acid, which is a naturally occurring amino acid. In some people, consuming too much of MSG can lead to allergy symptoms. This article discusses about the allergy symptoms of MSG.

Symptoms of MSG Allergy

There are several mild and severe symptoms of MSG allergy. Various MSG allergy symptoms are discussed below:

  • Severe headache
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Mental disorientation
  • Burning skin sensation
  • Pin prick sensation in chest
  • Swelling of face
  • Asthma attack

Some severe symptoms of MSG allergy can lead to jaw and throat tightness, which can cause difficulty in the mouth opening. There can be some disturbances in the gastrointestinal system such as vomiting and nausea etc. These are some of the important symptoms to identify MSG allergy condition.

Like other food allergies, there is no cure for MSG allergy. The only best way to avoid MSG allergy is to stay away from foods containing MSG. People with true MSG allergy can take disodium guanylate and disodium inosinate, which are substitutes of MSG.

You must understand the difference between MSG intolerance and MSG allergy symptoms. Food allergy is caused when the immune system responds to any food and treats it as a harmful foreign body and produces antibodies against it. When the digestive system responds to any food instead of the immune system, it is called food intolerance. This happens when any food irritates the digestive system of the body and the person is unable to break down the food, because of loss of enzymes in the metabolic pathway.
