A pumpkin is a kind of squash and belongs to Cucurbitaceae family. It is a type of fruit, which can cause allergy in a few hypersensitive people. Pumpkins can lead to several allergic symptoms like dermatitis, itching in mouth and various others.

Pumpkins are the richest source of various nutrition such as beta carotene and vitamin A. Beta carotene is a carotenoid, which is converted into vitamin A, once it is eaten and digested. Pumpkin seeds are nowadays widely used in various salads, breads and appetizers. If you are sensitive to other seeds, there are more likely chances of getting pumpkin seeds allergy. Some symptoms of pumpkin seeds allergy are as follows:

  • Eczema
  • Swelling in neck and mouth
  • Rhinoconjunctivitis symptoms like nasal congestion and sneezing

Asthma can be caused in some severe cases. This may also lead to other symptoms like breathing difficulties, breath shortness, wheezing and coughing.

The best way to avoid pumpkin allergy is to avoid pumpkin and foods containing pumpkin seeds. If severe allergic symptoms develop, immediately rush to the hospital. Adrenaline or epinephrine can be injected into the body to avoid further reactions. It should be kept in mind that people who are allergic to pumpkin seeds, can also be sensitive to zucchini, cucumber, watermelon and musk melon.

  2. Interesting. My infant experienced severe vomiting until emptied several times before we realized she was allergic/sensitive to squash. We haven’t tried it since & she is almost 4. :)
