Allergic Reaction to Food

Allergy is defined as the reactions shown by the immune system of the body towards any external substance, called allergen. Food allergy is one of the most concerned conditions of the body. This hypersensitive reaction can be caused by any foreign material like environmental substance, chemicals and consumed foods. Environmental and chemical allergies can be easily detected, but to detect food allergies is very difficult.

To detect food allergy is not an easy task because allergic reactions are observed after the foods are absorbed by the digestive system. If any of the component of the food is not accepted by the immune system of the body, it shows allergic symptoms and reactions. Various allergic reactions caused by foods are discussed in this article.

Symptoms of Allergic Reaction to food

Symptoms of food allergy mainly develop from 30 minutes of taking any food to 4 hours of food consumption. The symptoms of food allergy are divided into 3 categories:

  • Mild
  • Moderate
  • Severe

Mild Allergic Reactions

These symptoms do not spread over a large area. Mild allergic symptoms are as follows:

  • Inflammation or rashes
  • Congestion
  • Eczema or hives
  • Watery eyes, skin or palms

Moderate Allergic Reactions

If food allergy is not treated in time, the mild stage can develop into more severe symptoms and can spread to other body parts. Moderate allergy symptoms are as follows:

  • Itching
  • Breathing difficulties

Severe Allergic Symptoms

Anaphylaxis is another term for severe symptoms of allergy. This symptom is rarely found, but is known to be life threatening. Severe allergy symptoms include:

  • Cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Abdominal pains
  • Internal swelling of respiratory and digestive tract

To diagnose allergic reactions to food is very difficult because the causes are not known. When you visit to a doctor, he/she may ask you about your medical history and may also perform some allergy tests like skin prick test and blood tests etc. Until your allergies are detected, doctor will prefer you to keep on emergency. Diagnosing food allergy is a very slow process. Unless food allergy is diagnosed, treatments can’t be prescribed. Till then, avoiding some foods suspected to be allergic must be avoided. One should be aware of the allergic symptoms to avoid the serious conditions from food allergy.
