Histamine Rich Foods

Histamine is a natural substance that is produced by the body. It is also present in most of the foods. Histamine is released by the body during the times of allergy and stress.

What is Histamine?

During an allergic reaction, an allergen stimulates the release of antibodies, that attach themselves to mast cells. When mast cells release the histamine, it may trigger one or more of the following signs and symptoms:

  • Stomach may experience diarrhea and cramps
  • Lungs may wheeze or can have spasms
  • Sinuses may become congested, thereby causing headaches
  • Skin may itch and develop hives or rashes
  • Nose to itch, sneeze and also produce more mucus
  • Eyes may start itching, burning and may become watery

Histamine is a vasoactive amine that results in blood vessels dilatation and increases the production of mucus and bronchoconstriction. As it is present in almost all parts of the body, particularly intestinal mucosa, skin, sinuses, nose, lungs and some blood cells, it may trigger many symptoms.

The release of histamine may be triggered by most allergen. For instance, inhalant allergens like eat dander, dust mite and ragweed pollen, drugs like aspirin, sulfa and penicillin, foods like fish, wheat, egg, etc and stinging insect venom.
