Types of Skin Rashes

Skin rashes may develop due to numerous reasons, from allergies to poison, but always leads to some type of skin irritation. In fact, rash means irritation of the skin. Rashes on skin can be divided into two main categories: viral and local. A viral rash is one that spreads over the skin completely, while local rash afflicts only one particular area of the skin. Whatever may be the type, usually rashes cause itching, stinging or make you feel sensitive. In order to know more about various types of skin rashes, read the below lines.

Different Types of Skin Rashes:

Granuloma Annulare:

This is a persistent skin problem, where rashes appear in the circular form, along with the papules (red bumps), on the backs of feet, forearms and hands. Granuloma annulare usually afflicts young adults and children and mostly women than men.

Eczema:

This term is used to describe various conditions, characterized by itchy, dry, red and inflamed skin. Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common eczema forms. Eczema may affect both adults and children, but it isn’t contagious.

Lichen Planus:

In this condition, you may observe flat-topped, shiny bumps on your skin with a reddish-purplish color and angular shape. Often rashes appear on the neck, back, lower legs and ankles and wrists. Primarily, this condition is noticed in adults between the age group of 30 – 70.

Perioral dermatitis:

A person’s face is affected with this condition. Perioral dermatitis appears like red bumps around the mouth. Rarely, these bumps may even develop around the nose, eyes and even on forehead. Most commonly this skin ailment affects young women, sometimes it even affects men too.

Pityriasis rosea:

Pityriasis rosea is also referred to as Christmas tree rash. This is a very common mild rash on the skin. Initially, they are large, scaly and pink patches on the skin. They may appear on the back or on the chest, accompanied with patches on other body parts also. You may also experience itching due to skin lesions and inflammation or redness of the skin.

Contact Rashes:

As the name suggests, contact rashes appear when your body comes in contact with any allergen. The most common causes include chemicals and dyes in rubber, clothing, elastic and latex, soaps, cosmetics, detergents and plants such as Poison Sumac, Poison Oak and Poison Ivy.

Psoriasis:

This is a most common skin rash which erupts in the form of scaly, itchy and inflamed skin. Psoriasis is a chronic condition and may affect any part of the body like back, scalp, feet, hands, elbows and knees. The irritation caused by patches may range from mild to unbearable condition.

Seborrheic dermatitis:

Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis affects nearly 50% of the world’s population. The most probable factors for it can be alcohol-based lotions, infrequent shampooing, oily skin, weather extremes, fatigue, stress and age.

Hives:

These can be described as pale red and swollen bumps on the skin. Usually these cause itching and may also sting or burn. They are also referred to as urticaria and appear on the body unexpectedly. The primary cause for this can be the adverse reaction of the body to a few allergens. These skin rashes may last for about 24 hours and they disappear on their own.

Heat Rashes:

eat rashes are also called miliaria. This is an stinging or itching rash. Heat rashes form on the skin if your skin stays wet and hot for a prolonged period. Diaper and sweat rash are the two most common heat rashes. This can only be treated by keeping your skin cool and dry.

Rosacea:

Rosacea is a rash that occurs on the face. These are itchy, tiny and red bumps on the skin. These bumps may range fro mild to severe. Rosacea can only be treated, there are no permanent cures.

Swimmers Itch:

This condition is caused by the parasites that live in the water. These parasites burrow into the skin. The rashes on the skin appear when the parasites die in the skin. Usually rashes fade until you keep your skin clean.
