Symptoms of Nut Allergy

Nut allergy is believed to be the most common food allergy because it is an increasing health problem in humans particularly children. Though, it can occur at any age, it is often prominent in children. Most of the people who are affected with this condition might have developed this before three years of age.

Usually nut allergy denotes tree nuts like pecans, pistachios, macadamias, walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews, almonds and Brazil nuts allergy, but it can also include peanuts. This is so because peanut proteins structure is similar to tree nut proteins structure. Although peanuts are categorized in legumes and not under nuts, allergies to both the peanuts and tree nuts are same.

It is also noticed that a person with nut allergy may or may not react to peanuts and vice versa. Also a person allergic to one tree nut can also develop allergic reactions to other nuts. In order to identify the allergic reactions, this article gives information on symptoms of nut allergies.

  • Digestive problems:

    If you experience digestive problems like diarrhea, vomiting or nausea after consuming nuts or products related to nuts, then these symptoms can be due to nut allergy.

  • Difficulty breathing:

    In some cases, nut allergies can cause wheezing and shortness of breath within a few minutes after having foods that contain nuts or nut products.

  • Hives:

    You may observe hives on the skin immediately after consuming nut products or nuts. This can also be accompanied with redness of the skin and itchiness.

  • Runny nose:

    Your nose may become stuffy or start to run after consuming nuts. You may also begin to sneeze after eating nut products.

  • Itching:

    One may experience a prickling sensation or itchiness on the tongue, lips and in the mouth after eating foods containing nuts.

  • Anaphylactic shock:

    This can be a life threatening condition. The symptoms of anaphylactic shock include:

    • Dizziness
    • Rapid heartbeat
    • Swollen throat
    • Weakness
