How to Allergy Proof your House?

You spend most of your quality time at your house.Hence it is important to remove all possible sources of allergy from the house. Allergens hide under closets, attics, in wet bathrooms and kitchen sinks. Your lovable pets are a home to animal dander and plants outside the home are the source of pollen. You cannot shield yourself totally, but consider the following steps to allergy proof various areas of your house.

Kitchen

Wipe all counter tops and sinks dry. Swab the floor with disinfectant to remove traces of mold and mildew. Install a powerful exhaust to remove smoke while cooking. Clean the refrigerator regularly with a solution of baking soda, water, and keep it dry at all times to avoid mold growth.

Bedroom

You spend the maximum time sleeping in your bedroom. So take extra care to remove all sources of allergy. Clean all windows regularly and wipe the furniture with a damp cloth to remove dust. Clean the blinds and wash curtains every month. Sun your mattresses to remove bugs and encase them in dust free washable covers. Do the same for blankets, pillows, and comforters. Remove carpets and have wooden flooring that is easy to maintain . Install a HEPA filter in the vacuum cleaner for better cleaning. Avoid keeping soft toys and curios that gather dust in the room. Avoid keeping pets on the bed and keep them in a separate room if possible. Vacuum the mattress on both sides every fortnight and wash all bedding weekly in hot water. Do not keep wool blankets or foam cushions that attract mold. Do not keep perfumed candles in the room or eat in the room as it attracts cockroaches and rats.

Living room

Avoid carpets and rugs in the living room and use hardwood floors instead. Otherwise vacuum the carpets and rugs once a week with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a HEPA filter. Wear a face mask when vacuuming to prevent inhalation of dust. Dust the furniture daily with a wet cloth. Wash curtains regulalry and clean the filters of the air conditioner frequently. Clean windows and sills periodically and keep them closed especiallyduring the pollen season. Keep pets outside theliving area and bathe them often.

Bathroom

Wash the shower curtains regularly with a disinfectant or bleach. Dry completely before hanging them again. Clean the floor with bleach to avoid growth of mildew and mold. Install an exhaust fan so that the bathroom dries completely. Let the bathroom dry totally before closing the door. Clean the sinks, bathtubs and toilet bowls with disinfectant to prevent mold growth.

Basement

Avoid clutter and hold garage sales to get rid of useless items that simply gather dust. Keep the necessary items in airtight plastic bags and air them periodically . Place a dehumidifier in the storage area to prevent growth of fungus and molds.

All areas of the house accumulate dust and need proper cleaning. If you must do the cleaning, wear proper gloves and a dust mask to avoid inhalation of dirt particles. However if you have an allergy hire some help or ask another family member to help with the cleaning. This will reduce the allergic symptoms and bring relief to you.
