Allergy caused due to a tiny organism, the dust mite that thrives on house dust is called dust mite allergy. What is so dangerous about dust mites is that they are the only reason for causing allergic rhinitis. Allergic Rhinitis causes a reaction similar to asthma and pollen allergy. The protein DER p1 present in the waste matter and dead bodies of dust mites causes the allergic reaction. Sometimes cockroach waste also can lead to allergy.

Dust mites thrive in temperatures between 75 and 80 F and humidity of 70-80 %. They die in extreme heat humidity below 40%, and absorb moisture from their surroundings. So they multiply in summer and die in the cold winter. They survive on skin fallen from nails, hair, animal dander, fungi, bacteria and pollen. Dust mites live in carpets, upholstery, bedding, comforters, soft toys, blankets and furniture. They cannot live on hardwood and vinyl or linoleum flooring. A single mattress can have up to two million dust mites.

Symptoms of dust mite allergy

Dust mite allergy causes itching, sneezing, runny nose, stuffy ears, and watery eyes, breathing trouble, and rhinitis. If you are asthmatic, you may experience lung congestion, breathlessness, and asthmatic attacks in the night due to presence of dust mites in your bed.

Prevention of dust mites

Since dust mites are parasites, the best way to eliminate them is to clean your surroundings thoroughly and to leave them without food and water.

For mild dust allergy take anti-histamine, nasal sprays or decongestants. For moderate allergy take corticosteroids or montelukast. In case of an asthmatic attack take asthma medications prescribed by your doctor. You may need to take anti-allergy shots in case of severe allergy, or undergo desensitization to dust mites. Consult your doctor for the same.
